"YOUR VICTORY OVER CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME" - ABSTRACT
The fact that this disease has more than one name, and is not always seen as a "legitimate illness", helps to create a sense of mystery .... It is now felt that the name "chronic fatigue/pain disorder" ... is the best term to describe CFS and related conditions.
Research literature from the University of Newcastle's CPRU tends to prefer using this term instead of ME/CFS/FMS. Similarly, Bioscreen's documentation also prefers to use "chronic fatigue/pain disorder" in their groundbreaking research documentation.
It is fortunate that the majority of the members of the medical profession have recognised that CFS is a real and serious disorder. Unfortunately, many are still not willing to acknowledge the "real physical nature" of this illness, and are too willing to concentrate on the psychological aspects of CFS.
Obviously, any serious disease such as CFS will have a psychological effect on the sufferer. If this illness is also chronic, with an undefined duration and little hope of a quick cure, then it is inevitable that some patients will be affected emotionally.
Statistical data indicates that CFS sufferers have no more incidences of psychological or psychiatric problems than do the general population. Unfortunately, a significant number of medical practitioners still choose to ignore these statistics.
It is to be hoped that this book will dispel the popularly accepted view that the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are unknown, and therefore it may be a "just a psychosomatic condition".
